Marcelo Álvarez

BIOGRAFIA
Marcelo Álvarez is internationally recognized as one of the most important tenors of this era and has been acclaimed at virtually all the great opera houses of the world including the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera Covent Garden, Teatro alla Scala, Opéra National de Paris, Bavarian State Opera in Munich, Vienna State Opera and the Chicago Lyric Opera, among others.

Born in Cordoba, Argentina, Álvarez made his professional debut in 1995 as Elvino in La Sonnambula with the Teatro La Fenice and then was invited to perform operas including Rigoletto, Lucia di Lammermoor and La Traviata in all the world's greatest theatres. In recent seasons Álvarez has add the more dramatic roles to his repertoire, such as Manrico in Il Trovatore, Don José in Carmen, Cavaradossi in Tosca and Riccardo in Un Ballo in Maschera. He has been hailed by audiences and critics as the leading exponent of these roles to be heard today.

His recent appearances in productions of Tosca, Il Trovatore and Un Ballo in Maschera at the Royal Opera Covent Garden were extremely successful, as were other recent engagements in the last season in Carmen at the MET and in Florence (conducted by Zubin Mehta), Luisa Miller in Parma and Madrid and Il Trovatore in Zurich and Tosca in Rome and Verona.

In the current 2008-2009 season, Álvarez stars as Manrico in a new production of Il Trovatore at the Metropolitan Opera and is also heard in Luisa Miller in Valencia conducted by Lorin Maazel, in Un Ballo in Maschera in Madrid, Tosca in Parma and in his first performances as Maurizio in Adriana Lecouvreur in Turin. He also appears this season as Cavaradossi in Tosca at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin and in Il Trovatore in Zurich. He will also be heard in solo concerts in Moscow, Budapest, Abu Dhabi, Thelessoniki, Catania and Salerno.

Future engagements include opening night of the 2009 season at the Metropolitan Opera in a new production of Tosca, his role debut in Andrea Chenier at the Opéra Bastille where he will also sing his first performances of La Forza del Destino, his first performances of Radames in Aida in a new production at the Royal Opera Covent Garden, his first Ernani in Bologna and Parma and several productions at the Met and in all the major Italian opera houses.
