Biography

Augustin Dumay was born in 1949 in Paris into a family of musicians, and began violin lessons at the age of five after his parents took him to hear Nathan Milstein, who later became his teacher. In 1959 he entered the Paris Conservatoire, where he studied the violin with Roland Charmy and chamber music with Jean Hubeau, remaining there for two years and taking a premier prix in 1962 before continuing his musical education privately. His recital début at the 1963 Montreux Festival attracted the attention of Henryk Szeryng, who recommended him for a tour of South America. On his return he became a pupil of Milstein, and later studied in Brussels for seven years with Arthur Grumiaux. In 1967, while still studying, he began his career, both as a soloist and as a chamber musician collaborating with the pianists Jean-Philippe Collard and Michel Béroff and the cellist Frédéric Lodéon.

1979
International recognition comes when he plays Bartók’s Second Violin Concerto in Paris under Herbert von Karajan and is immediately invited to appear with the Berliner Philharmoniker

Since then Dumay has performed regularly with leading orchestras, including the Orchestre national de France, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, the Japan Philharmonic, London Symphony, and English Chamber Orchestra, with conductors such as Sir Colin Davis, Seiji Ozawa, Charles Dutoit, Kurt Sanderling, Wolfgang Sawallisch, and Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos
