Nato il 26 Gennaio 1981 a Barquisimeto, in Venezuela, Gustavo Dudamel ha iniziato a suonare il violino quando aveva dieci anni, e successivamente ha cominciato a studiare composizione. Nel 1996 iniziò gli studi di direzione d’orchestra con Rodolfo Saglimbeni e nel corso dello stesso anno fu nominato direttore musicale dell’Amadeus Chamber Orchestra. Nel 1999, ha continuato i suoi studi di direzione d’orchestra con José Antonio Abreu ed è stato nominato direttore della Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela (SBYOV), un ensemble fondato da Abreu che è largamente conosciuto per il suo importante ruolo nel programma di educazione e miglioramento delle vite di decine di migliaia di ragazzi e bambini vittime della povertà in Venezuela. Dudamel è molto richiesto come direttore ospite e ha perciò lavorato con alcune tra le più rinomate orchestre e con i migliori musicisti. Attualmente è direttore principale della Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra ed è direttore della Los Angeles Philhar¬monic Orchestra e della Simón Bolívar Symphony orchestra.
2000 Con la SBYOV intraprende un acclamato tour in Germania. Dudamel viene nominato direttore della Youth Orchestra of the Andean Countries e direttore principale della Youth Orchestra of the Americas
2002 Finalista nel concorso inaugurale Maazel/Vilar per direttori d’orchestra
2004 Vince il concorso inaugurale Bamberger Symphoniker Mahler; sostituisce Frans Brüggen con la Philharmonia Orchestra di Londra al Beethovenfest di Bonn; dirige la Mahler Chamber Orchestra a Caracas; Sir Simon Rattle e Claudio Abbado accettano l’invito di Dudamel a visitare il Venezuela e dirigere la sua orchestra.
2005 Dirige la Philharmonia al Festival Hall di Londra all’interno dell’International Conductors’ Academy; debutta con la Israel Philharmonic e ai BBC Proms. Va in tour in Germania con la SBYOV. Altri debutti in quest’anno includono l’orchestra dell’Accademia di Santa Cecilia a Roma e Radio France, oltre al debutto negli Stati Uniti con la Los Angeles Philharmonic. Sigla un contratto esclusivo con la Deutsche Grammophon
2006 Debutta, tra gli altri, con la City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, la Dresden Staatskapelle e Filarmonica della Scala. Fa il tour in Israele con la Israel Philharmonic, il tour dell’Italia e della Germania con la SBYOV, e fa un’apparizione con la Boston Symphony a Tanglewood. I suoi ingaggi operistici includono L’elisir d’amore di Donizetti alla Berlin Staatsoper e il Don Giovanni di Mozart alla Scala. La sua prima pubblicazione con Deutsche Grammophon, le Sinfonie n. 5 e 7 di Beethoven con la SBYOV, vale a Dudamel un Echo Award nella categoria “New Artist of the Year 2007”. Viene nominato direttore principale della Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra a partire dal 2007/08
2007 Viene ingaggiato per concerti con LA Philharmonic, Philharmonia, Berlin Staatskapelle e Gewandhaus di Lipsia. Debutta con la Chicago Symphony, la New York Philharmonic e con i Wiener Philarmoniker. 2008 Dudamel e la SBYOV debuttano stabili al Festival di Salisburgo, tornano al Festival di Lucerna all’interno di un lungo tour, e iniziano una tournèe in Asia. Born on 26 January 1981 in Barquisimeto, Venezuela, Gustavo Dudamel was ten when he took up the violin, and soon was also studying composition. In 1996, he began his conducting studies with Rodolfo Saglimbeni and during the same year was named music director of the Amadeus Chamber Orchestra. In 1999, he continued his conducting studies with José Antonio Abreu and was appointed music director of the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela (SBYOV), an ensemble founded by Abreu that is widely recognized for its role in transforming the lives of tens of thousands of impoverished youths. Dudamel is also in great demand as a guest conductor and has worked with the world’s most renowned orchestras and musicians. He is currently principal conductor of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and music director of the Los Angeles Philhar¬monic and Simón Bolívar Symphony orchestras.
2000 With the SBYOV he undertakes a much-acclaimed tour of Germany. Dudamel is appointed music director of the Youth Orchestra of the Andean Countries and principal conductor of the Youth Orchestra of the Americas

2006 Debuts with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Dresden Staatskapelle and Filarmonica della Scala among others. Tour of Israel with the Israel Philharmonic, tour of Italy and Germany with the SBYOV, and an appearance with the Boston Symphony at Tanglewood. Opera engagements include Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore at the Berlin Staatsoper and Mozart’s Don Giovanni at La Scala. His first DG release, Beethoven’s Symphonies nos. 5 & 7 with the SBYOV, brings Dudamel an Echo Award in the category “New Artist of the Year 2007”. Dudamel is appointed principal conductor of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, starting in 2007/08
2007 Engagements include concerts with the LA Philharmonic, Philharmonia, Berlin Staatskapelle and Leipzig Gewandhaus. Debut appearances include the Chicago Symphony, New York Philharmonic and Vienna Philharmonic. A highly acclaimed concert tour with the SBYOV includes appearances at the BBC Proms, Edinburgh, Schleswig-Holstein and Lucerne festivals. A special highlight is his appearance with the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra at a birthday concert for the Pope at the Vatican (available on DVD). Acclaim for his recordings of Mahler’s Fifth Symphony with the SBYOV and Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra with the LA Philharmonic (the latter as download only). Awarded the Premio de la Latindad for outstanding contributions to Latin cultural life; he also receives the Royal Philharmonic Society Music Award for Young Artists
2008 Dudamel and the SBYOV make their debut with a Salzburg Festival residency, return to the Lucerne Festival as part of an extensive tour of Europe, and make their debut Asian tour. Numerous concerts with the Gothenburg Symphony, LA Philharmonic, Radio France Philharmonic and Philhar¬monia. In June he makes his first appearance with the Berlin Philharmonic at the Waldbühne. Puccini’s La Bohème at Berlin’s Staatsoper and La Scala. Releases: a highly acclaimed compilation of Latin-American showpieces, entitled Fiesta, recorded live in Caracas with the SBYOV; Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique with the LA Philharmonic is available for download only. The Promise of Music, a full-length documentary film about Dudamel and the SBYOV, is issued on DVD. The SBYOV is granted Spain’s prestigious Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts; along with his mentor Dr. Abreu, Dudamel is awarded the Q Prize from Harvard University for extraordinary service to children
2009 The year begins with Beethoven’s Symphony no. 9 with the Berlin Staatskapelle and continues with concerts with the Chicago Symphony, New York Philharmonic and Philharmonia orchestras as well as the Berlin and the Vienna Philharmonic; appearances with the Gothenburg Symphony plus tours with the SBYOV to Europe and North America. Conducts Mozart’s Don Giovanni at the Berlin Staatsoper and makes his debut with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Begins his tenure as music director of the LA Philharmonic in autumn. His releases this year with the SBYOV feature Tchaikovsky’s Symphony no. 5 and Francesca da Rimini (CD) and their 2008 Salzburg Festival concert with Martha Argerich and the Capuçon brothers (DVD); his inaugural Disney Hall concert as LA Philharmonic music director is released on DVD and for download
2010 This year brings Bizet’s Carmen at La Scala plus concerts with his Gothenburg orchestra at home and at the Festival de Canarias, with his Los Angeles orchestra at home and on an extensive US tour, the Vienna Philharmonic in Vienna, at New York’s Carnegie Hall and at the Lucerne Festival, and with SBYOV and Berliner Philharmoniker (New Year’s Eve Concert featuring mezzo Elīna Garanča). For release this year: Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du Printemps and Revueltas’s La noche de los mayas with the SBYOV and, on DVD, Celebración: the gala opening concert of the LA Philharmonic’s 2010/11 season
2011 Concerts with the LA Philharmonic at Disney Hall, on their first European tour and in summer at the Hollywood Bowl; with the Gothenburg Symphony at home and on tours in Sweden, Oslo, and Reykjavik; with the (renamed) Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela on a summer tour of South America followed by a European tour including performances at the Salzburg Festival, BBC Proms and in Istanbul; with the Vienna Philharmonic and with the Berlin Philharmonic at the Salzburg Easter Festival. In winter 2011 he inaugurates live broadcasts with the LA Philharmonic in over 450 movie theatres across the US and Canada, and in June, the documentary Let the Children Play is shown in 500 North American cinemas. In May, he is inducted into the Royal Swedish Academy of Music. Named Gramophone’s “Artist of the Year”. This year’s Dudamel releases include the 2010 Berlin Philharmonic New Year’s Eve Concert with Elīna Garanča on DVD; audio release of “Tchaikovsky and Shakespeare” with the Simón Bolívar orchestra; a 3-CD box of symphonies by Sibelius, Nielsen and Bruckner with the Gothenburg Symphony; and two downloads on DG Concerts with the LA Philharmonic: Adams’s Slonimsky’s Earbox plus Bernstein’s “Jeremiah” Symphony and Brahms’s Fourth Symphony (Grammy®: “Best Orchestral Performance”)
2012 His year begins with a complete Mahler cycle in Los Angeles and Caracas, shared between the LA Philharmonic and the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra. It continues with his Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra in Sweden, Portugal and Spain; the Brahms symphonies in Paris with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France; and concerts with the Berlin Philharmonic in Berlin, Paris and Vienna. Spring concerts with his LA orchestra at home to include performances of Don Giovanni and the world premiere of Adams’s The Gospel According to the Other Mary. In June, the Schönbrunn Summer Night Concert with the Vienna Philharmonic and concerts with his Gothenburg orchestra in Sweden and with his Simón Bolívar orchestra at London’s Festival Hall and the Amsterdam Concertgebouw.
