GUITAR MAN è un capolavoro in cui la chitarra (sia elettrica che acustica) e la splendida voce di Benson sono calate in un contesto di grandi musicisti: le tastiere Joe Sample e David Garfield, il giovane astro del contrabbasso Ben Williams e il vecchio amico Harvey Mason alla batteria. Benson suona (e canta) da par suo, ritagliandosi degli sbalorditivi brani per chitarra sola in "Tenderly" e nella celeberrima ballata irlandese "Danny Boy". Altri brani spaziano da Lennon & McCartney, Stevie Wonder, John Coltrane e standard immortali come "My One and Only Love". Pur con numerose puntate nel mondo del pop, GUITAR MAN è un album dall'elevato peso specifico jazzistico, dove Benson suona da par suo con grande generosità.
